Sometimes you need coffee. Sometimes you need coffee real bad. We’ve all settled for motel mud water, gas station sadness and freezer relics because that was the only "coffee" available. Bad coffee is better than no coffee? The jury is still out on that one. We had the radical idea that instant coffee shouldn't suck and no coffee lover should have to compromise convenience for quality. It should never be one or the other type of situation. Our Instant Craft Coffee is solving the age-old problem for all those times you want a great cup of coffee but don't have a grinder, scale or brewer. We created this for all the humans on-the-go, the appreciators of the finer things, the outdoor adventurers and, most importantly, all coffee lovers. Fit a week's worth of specialty coffee in your pocket, carry-on or backpack. Instant Craft Coffee can go anywhere.

QUICK HISTORY OF INSTANT COFFEE

The invention of instant coffee was attributed to a Japanese chemist, Sartori Kato, back in 1901 when it first debuted at the Pan-American Exposition. It wasn’t until recently that instant coffee’s history got a slight rewrite when an even earlier mention was discovered. Edging Kato out by over two decades was David Strang, a New Zealander, who applied for a “soluble coffee powder” patent using his dry, hot air process in 1890. It wasn’t until 1906 that another riff was introduced to the market by Cyrus Blanke, followed by an additional update four years later. Chemist and avid coffee drinker, George Constant Louis Washington noticed something peculiar one day. The powdery build-up on his coffee pot spout caught his eye and piqued his curiosity. Further experiments and several more cups of coffee later, his iteration of instant coffee led to the large scale manufacturing of the conventional coffee crystals we all know today.

It seems instant coffee hasn’t changed much since the earlier days until now. Any mention of instant coffee today is usually met with a snarled face (and possibly a few sounds of disgust) and we totally get it. The old-timey version was made with a cost-saving versus quality cup mindset. Instant producers of yesteryear wanted the most bang for their buck and were often stretching their formulas by adding filler carbohydrates. Sometimes people were drinking a fifty, fifty cup of lackluster brown water.

With the history and stigmas of instant coffee, we approached this project, knowing that our take had to meet the same high expectations and standards we set for our freshly brewed coffee. During development, if someone could pick out the instant cup amidst the freshly brewed cups, it meant back to the drawing board. The challenge of upgrading the instant coffee game was no easy task.

How Verve Instant craft coffee is made

There are a few different methods for creating instant coffee, but we designed a souped-up version of the freeze-drying method. Our state-of-the-art equipment can deliver on the lofty goal of capturing each coffee’s subtle and unique flavor profiles. It all starts with our small-batch roasted direct trade coffee that we brew hot. After precise brewing, the coffee is then freeze-dried at sub-zero temperatures in an oxygen-free environment. The concentrated coffee powder is now shelf-stable; ready to be enjoyed whenever, wherever. All you need is six ounces of liquid and you’re good to go.
