Cup Characteristics: Exotic tropical fruit flavors like guava and passionfruit create a complexity in the cup that is accentuated nicely by a deep black cherry sweetness. The body is reminiscent of syrup and the finish lingers on the palate.
Sourcing Information: Colombia is considered by many to be the pinnacle of coffee quality. No other place in Latin America produces so many bags of exportable coffee at such an incredibly high level
of quality, all while having thousands of individual farmers producing coffee with different resources, different growing conditions, different everything.
This year we have two stunning lots from Southwestern Colombia. They represent two varying degrees of what makes Colombia special.
First we have the extremely specific: Finca La Aldea. Arlex Marulanda Calderón is growing some of the finest coffee in the world in the mountainous municipality of Planadas in the department of Tolima. He grows mainly Caturra with a little splattering of Castillo, which at his altitude of 1800-2000 meters produces amazing results. His farm is just a couple hectares big and he only produced 900 pounds of exportable coffee this year.
Then, we have Piendamo, a regional lot of coffee from the hard work of roughly 100 small share farmers in Cauca. The town of Piendamo is about 50km north of Popoyan a major thoroughfare in Cauca. These farmers all produce small allotments of coffee similar in size to La Aldea, about 500- 1500 pounds of coffee each. They grow Caturra, Colombia and Typica varieties. This lot showcases how the work of many can produce exceptional results.
