Cup Characteristics: Hunapu is loaded with a juicy body and full of fresh fruit characteristics, from ripe red berries to the crispness of a just-picked varietal apple. The finish is clean and long.
Sourcing Information: Hunapu is a project started by Luiz Pedro Zelaya to help isolate amazing coffees grown by some smaller scale farmers in the Antigua region of Guatemala.
The criteria for which these coffees have to fall into in order to be called Hunapu is rigid, and starts with lots that are exclusively Bourbon variety. The amazing flavors of the heirloom variety Bourbon create a perfect canvas for the characteristics of Antigua to be highlighted. Zelaya started Hunapu in order to help a local indigenous population increase their infrastructure for producing high quality coffees.
Most of the farms in Antigua are single owner estates that have been in the family for generations, and to have a program where small scale farmers can be rewarded for their quality assessed in a blind cupping, rather than the legacy of their farm is a much needed development.
This coffee comes from one single day lot from one single farm in the Hunapu network.
