Cup Characteristics: Githongo’s classic Kenyan citrus is tangy and sweet, but fades florally like rosewater. Overall, a clean and juicy coffee with a complex character.
Sourcing information: The Komothai Coffee Growers Co-operative Society planted its first coffee trees in 1952, and has been producing coffees on the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range ever since. Like many co-ops in Kenya, it is managed democratically with an elected representative from each of the mills it utilizes (in this case, 13). Currently, the co-op has a total membership of 9,696 farms, and 78 permanent staff members, all of whom are under the supervision of a Secretary Manager who oversees the everyday running of the co-op.
Githongo is one of the mills run by the Komothai CGCS, and the origin of the extraordinary coffee. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to offer so many Kenyas as of late, and Githongo is one more that we’re excited to add to the list. Coffee from Githongo is meticulously hand picked and sorted daily to ensure that only red, ripe cherries undergo processing at the wet mill. Once washed, the coffees are sun dried and sent to the dry mill (which is also a part of the Komothai CGCS), where it undergoes its final processing. The amount of detail and work that goes into this coffee is truly remarkable, and can be clearly detected in the cup.
