Sourcing information: The Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society is one of the larger Coops in the Nyeri District of Kenya. With a total of 18 factories that fall into its jurisdiction, Othaya-based factories have a total of 14,207 members picking coffee for them. The Coop was founded in the 50s when Kenya was trying to organize its coffee industry in logical and economically feasible ways. Most of this work was identifying the borders and area of each Coop, and placing a board of directors in place to oversee the operations. The distribution of factories into Coops was namely a location-based exercise.
The proximity of the Gatuyaini factory to the Karima forest is why it is a part of the Othaya FCS. Gatuyaini is located near the Thuti river. It was founded in 1969 and has a few hundred members bringing cherry to the station.
The farmers of this factory are required to bring only ripe red cherry and the processing is fairly traditional. De-pulping and washing in channels and a pre and post-ferment soak are applied to balance water activity and moisture; after, the coffee is dried on raised beds.
